DESCRIPTION:Bob Keeler spent more than four decades at Newsday\, as a reporter\, editor and columnist.  He will discuss why the newspaper business is under serious threat.   Since 2005\, 2100 newspapers have gone out of business and some major cities have no daily paper at all.  Charges of “fake news” have eroded public confidence in newspapers. Yet important reporting is still being done—reporting that is saving lives and strengthening democracy. \nAbout Bob Keeler: \nBob Keeler spent more than four decades writing for Newsday—as a town and county beat reporter\, as Albany bureau chief\, as a national correspondent\, as editor of the Sunday magazine\, as a religion reporter\, and as an editorial writer and columnist. He retired from Newsday at the end of 2012 and worked for five years as a consultant to the Hagedorn Foundation. Now he is working on a book about attitudes toward the military: “Sacred Soldier: The Dangers of Worshiping Warriors.”

At the same time\, Louisa Hargrave pioneered the first commercial vineyard and winery on Long Island\, centered on Estate production of vitis vinifera\, European wine grapes that\, historically\, had been thought impossible to grow on the East Coast.   They and their families put the focus on local quality and freshness\, at the forefront of a nationwide “locavore” movement.  Since then\, coincidentally\, both have written extensively about food and wine\, including books by John (“The Food and Wine of the North Fork\,” “The Story of North Fork Wine\,” and “The Poetry of Cooking”) and by Louisa (“The Vineyard: a Memoir.”) \nJoin them for a lively discussion of the evolution of food\, wine\, and hospitality as they experienced it.

DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Lifetime Learning Speakers’ Bureau \nDespite the Paris Agreement and the excitement about wind and solar power\, we have not yet turned any definitive corner on climate change.  Emissions are rising again and the 1.5°C/2°C temperature targets look increasingly out of reach.  Worse yet\, reaching Net Zero is unlikely to be the end of the climate crisis\, but merely the end of the beginning.  For centuries thereafter\, humanity will need to implement new tools to deal with the changed environment After Net Zero. \nPresented by Wake Smith: As a lecturer at Yale University\, Wake Smith teaches a world-leading undergraduate course on climate intervention\, which forms the basis for his book Pandora’s Toolbox: The Hopes and Hazards of Climate Interventions.  Smith is also a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School\, writing scholarly articles on costs\, aeronautics\, and governance of solar geoengineering. Prior to his academic career\, Smith served in several executive roles in the aeronautical industry\, including as the President of a division of Boeing.
