Peconic Landing will host the 20th Annual John May Mile and 5K Race to benefit the Greenport Fire Department on Saturday, May 9. The family-friendly event features a barbecue lunch, raffles, and more.

The John May Mile and 5K fundraiser is open to runners and walkers of all ages and fitness abilities, offering both a relaxed mile-long walk and a more challenging 3.1-mile run. Registration and stretching begin at 7:30 a.m. at Brecknock Hall with the race and walk to start at 9 a.m. Runners and walkers may register at:www.peconiclanding.org/JMM.

“Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the John May Mile and 5K is incredibly meaningful for all of us at Peconic Landing,” said Robert J. Syron, President and CEO of the not-for-profit life plan community. “For two decades, this event has brought the community together in support of the Greenport Fire Department and the dedicated volunteers who show up every day to protect and serve the North Fork. Now more than ever, we must continue to rally behind them to ensure they have the resources they need to respond when it matters most.”

Since inception in 2005, the annual John May Mile and 5K has raised more than $400,570 to support the local first responders. The most recent event in 2025 contributed a total of $28,570, helping to purchase and maintain rescue equipment vital to keeping fire department volunteers safe during response efforts.

“The strength of the Greenport Fire Department is, as ever, its people—volunteers who show up, stay focused on the mission, and stand unified in service,” said Greenport Fire Department Chief Albie de Kerillis. “Many grew up here, others chose to call this place home, but everyone works together with a shared purpose that feels like it’s been built over a lifetime. This donation directly supports these members by helping fund the training and equipment that keeps us ready to respond when the community calls.”

Following the race will be an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on the back lawn of Brecknock Hall. As part of this ceremony, Peconic Landing will present The Older Americans Champion Award to Paul Romanelli of Cutchogue, NY.& The annual award honors local individuals or organizations for their years of service and continued dedication to older Americans, acknowledging the contributions they make to improve the lives of older adults on the East End of Long Island. Romanelli, president of Sufolk Security Systems since 1999, will be honored for his 10 years of service on the Eastern Long Island Hospital (ELIH) Foundation Board of Directors. In 2020, Romanelli helped the hospital coordinate with the community to raise over $450,000 to cover the costs of protective gear during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to his tenure as an ELIH Foundation Board Member, he has also served on the North Fork Chamber of Commerce and has contributed to many local philanthropic efforts.

“Those who are fortunate to know Paul understand that he is always putting the community first,” said Syron. “His decade of service on the ELIH Foundation Board reflects a genuine commitment to ensuring access to quality healthcare for older adults and families across the North Fork. Through his dedication, Paul has helped strengthen vital resources that support not only older residents, but the greater community as a whole. We are proud to honor him as this year’s Older Americans Champion for his exceptional service and impact.”

To register as a runner or vendor, please visit www.peconiclanding.org/jmm. Those interested in sponsoring the event or donating a raffle prize are asked to contact DRadigan@peconiclanding.org. All proceeds benefit the Greenport Fire Department. We appreciate your support!

When Is the Right Time for Memory Care? Deciding when it’s time to explore memory care is rarely simple. It’s often emotional, sometimes urgent and almost always accompanied by a lot of questions. For many individuals and families, the decision isn’t just about care needs today but about finding the right environment for both the present and the future.

If you’ve started to notice changes in memory, behavior or daily routines, or if supporting a family member or friend is becoming more complex, it may be the right time to consider what memory care can offer.

Recognizing When More Support Is Needed

Memory loss can show up in different ways. Sometimes it’s subtle, like missed appointments, repeated questions or difficulty managing familiar tasks. Other times, it becomes more pronounced and begins to affect safety, communication or overall well being.

When these changes begin to impact daily life, memory support provides something that’s difficult to replicate at home. It offers a thoughtfully designed setting with structured support, trained team members and programs created specifically for individuals living with cognitive change.

Equally important, it provides peace of mind. Care is not only available but consistent, compassionate and tailored to evolving needs.

The Benefit of Direct Admission to Memory Support

In some situations, waiting isn’t the best option. When needs become more immediate, direct admission to memory care allows individuals to move into a supportive environment without delay.

This can help:

  • Reduce stress during a time of uncertainty
  • Ensure safety and proper supervision
  • Provide immediate access to specialized programs and engagement
  • Support families who may be feeling overwhelmed

Rather than trying to bridge gaps at home, direct admission offers a smoother transition into a setting designed to support both cognitive health and quality of life.

Planning Ahead with Confidence

For others, the decision may not feel urgent but planning ahead can make all the difference.

Choosing an independent living setting that also offers memory support creates a sense of continuity. It allows individuals and couples to enjoy an active, maintenance-free lifestyle today while knowing that additional support is available if it’s ever needed.

This is especially meaningful for those planning ahead for themselves or alongside a partner. If one partner begins to need memory support, they can remain in the same community, close to one another and with access to the right level of care. That kind of proximity can be incredibly reassuring during a time of change.

A Thoughtful Approach to the Future

Exploring memory care is about gaining the right kind of support at the right time.

Whether you’re navigating an immediate need or thinking ahead, having options matters. From direct admission when care is needed now to planning for what may come later, the goal is the same. Creating an environment where individuals feel safe, supported and connected.

Starting the conversation early can make the path forward clearer and far less overwhelming. If you have questions about memory support, call 631-593-8216 today to discuss your specific needs.

Spring has a way of inspiring possibilities. The air feels lighter, the days stretch a little longer and the North Fork begins to bloom with renewed energy. It is a season that invites reflection and encourages fresh starts.

For many older adults and their families, spring can also spark an important question: what do we want the next chapter of life to look like?

At Peconic Landing, that next chapter is about balance. It is about maintaining the autonomy you value today while securing the long-term care reassurance that protects tomorrow.

Embracing Independence in a Vibrant Community

Independent living should feel exactly as it sounds, independent. It should offer freedom, flexibility and the ability to shape your days around what brings you joy.

At Peconic Landing, members trade the responsibilities of homeownership for a maintenance-free lifestyle that opens the door to new opportunities. No more worrying about landscaping, snow removal, repairs or household upkeep. Instead, time is spent pursuing passions, building friendships and enjoying the cultural richness of the North Fork.

Members take part in fitness classes designed to support strength and balance. They attend lectures, concerts and art workshops. They gather with friends for chef-prepared meals or explore scenic waterfront paths. Some rediscover hobbies set aside years ago. Others discover entirely new interests.

Every day is guided by personal choice. That autonomy is not just preserved; it is enhanced.

The Power of Proactive Planning

One of the most meaningful decisions someone can make is to plan ahead while they are healthy and active. Too often, conversations about senior living happen during a time of crisis such as after a fall, an illness or an unexpected hospitalization.

Choosing a Life Plan Community, like Peconic Landing, allows you to move forward from a place of strength. You are making a thoughtful decision on your timeline, not reacting to circumstances.

This proactive approach provides clarity for families and confidence for members. Loved ones gain reassurance knowing there is a comprehensive plan in place. Members gain peace of mind knowing they can focus on living fully in the present.

Long Term Care Reassurance Without Sacrificing Independence

A common misconception is that planning for future care somehow limits independence. In reality, it does the opposite.

As a Life Plan Community, Peconic Landing offers a full continuum of care, including assisted livingmemory supportskilled nursing and rehabilitation services. Should health needs evolve over time, members can transition seamlessly to higher levels of care without leaving the community they know and trust.

That continuity matters. Familiar surroundings, established friendships and trusted caregivers all contribute to emotional well-being during times of change.

Long-term care reassurance does not mean giving up your independence today. It means protecting it for tomorrow.

A Lifestyle Designed for Whole-Person Wellness

Spring renewal is about fresh air and blooming landscapes. It doesn’t stop there as it’s also about well-being. At Peconic Landing, wellness is woven into daily life.

Physical health is supported through fitness programs, aquatic exercise and access to expert guidance. Intellectual wellness thrives through lectures, discussion groups and lifelong learning opportunities. Social connections flourish through shared meals, clubs and community events. Emotional well-being is strengthened by living among neighbors who become friends.

This holistic approach ensures that members are not simply living in a new place. They are living well.

Strengthening Family Peace of Mind

The decision to move to a senior living community often impacts more than one person. Adult children frequently carry quiet concerns about their parents’ safety, isolation or future healthcare needs.

When a parent chooses Peconic Landing, those concerns are eased. Families know their family member is part of an engaged community with access to comprehensive support if needed.

Visits become less about checking in and more about enjoying time together. Conversations shift from worry to shared experiences. The reassurance of long-term care planning benefits everyone.

Spring Is the Season to Start the Conversation

Just as nature renews itself each spring, this season offers an opportunity to reflect on what matters most. Is it the freedom to travel without worrying about home maintenance? The desire to be surrounded by peers and enriching programs? The comfort of knowing healthcare support is nearby?

There is no single right time to explore senior living, but there is value in exploring it before it becomes urgent. Touring a community, asking questions and imagining your daily life in a new setting can bring clarity and excitement.

At Peconic Landing, many members say they wish they had made the move sooner. They often describe a sense of relief. Relief from home responsibilities. Relief from uncertainty. Relief in knowing they made a confident, forward-thinking choice.

A Fresh Start Rooted in Confidence

Spring reminds us that growth is natural and change can be positive. In a Life Plan Community, you can step into a lifestyle that supports both independence and security.

At Peconic Landing, autonomy and long-term care reassurance exist side by side. You can wake up each morning focused on opportunity, not obligation. You can enjoy today knowing tomorrow is thoughtfully planned.

If this season has you thinking about what comes next, we invite you to learn more about independent living at Peconic Landing. Discover how you can embrace a fresh start this spring with freedom in the present and confidence in the future. Click here to contact our team.

A Heart-Healthy Lifestyle That Nourishes Body and Soul

This is the second post in our 12-part series exploring reasons to choose a continuing care retirement community like Peconic Landing. As we celebrate Heart Health Month, it’s the perfect time to talk about something that supports heart health in more ways than one. Good food, meaningful connection, and a lifestyle that makes both easy to enjoy.

Eating Well Without Giving Anything Up

Heart-healthy living does not have to mean boring meals or strict routines. At Peconic Landing, members enjoy a variety of dining venues that offer flavorful options made with fresh ingredients and thoughtful preparation. Menus include dishes rich in vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats which are known to support heart health.

Whether it’s a beautifully prepared fish dish, a vibrant seasonal salad, or a comforting meal made lighter and smarter, members can choose food that feels indulgent and nourishing at the same time. Best of all, there’s flexibility. You decide what works for your lifestyle and preferences while knowing healthier choices are always available.

Wellness That Fits Real Life

Heart health is about more than what’s on the plate. It’s about consistency, balance and enjoying life. Having access to multiple restaurants within the community makes it easier to stick with healthy habits without sacrificing variety or spontaneity. You can dine casually one night, enjoy a more social experience the next, or meet friends for lunch without ever leaving campus.

This kind of convenience supports long-term wellness in a way that feels natural.

Connection Is Good for the Heart Too

There’s another side of heart health that often gets overlooked. Social connection. Strong relationships and regular interaction are proven to support emotional well-being, reduce stress and contribute to overall health.

At Peconic Landing, socialization happens organically. Meals become shared experiences. Conversations flow easily. Members connect whether they’re married, partnered or single. No one has to feel left out or alone, especially during moments that can be difficult elsewhere.

Never Spending Holidays Alone

Holidays like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day take on a different meaning in a community setting. Instead of feeling isolated, members are surrounded by friends, programming and opportunities to gather. Whether it’s a special meal, a themed event or simply enjoying good company, the focus shifts from what’s missing to what’s shared. Read our testimonials to hear directly from members and families.

It’s a reminder that love and connection come in many forms, and community is one of the most meaningful.

A Lifestyle That Supports the Whole Heart

Choosing a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) like Peconic Landing means choosing a lifestyle that supports physical health, emotional well-being and social connection all at once. From heart-healthy dining options to built-in opportunities for companionship, it’s a way of living that truly takes the heart into account.

It also means planning ahead with confidence. As a full-service CCRC, Peconic Landing offers assisted living and memory care should those needs ever arise. Members can enjoy independent living today knowing additional support is available right here on campus if it becomes necessary.

That continuity brings peace of mind not only to members but to their families as well. There is comfort in knowing that if health needs change, trusted team members and familiar surroundings remain part of daily life. There is no sudden move and no searching for options during a stressful time.

It is a lifestyle designed to care for the whole heart, both now and in the years ahead.

And this is just reason number two.

Stay tuned as we continue our series and explore more of the everyday benefits that make life in a CCRC such a rewarding choice.

Navigating the Winter Months in New York — Without the Shovel

This post is the first in a 12-part series exploring reasons to move to a continuing care retirement community (CCRC) like Peconic Landing. From maintenance-free living to long-term peace of mind, each article will highlight how a CCRC supports an active, connected lifestyle through every season of life. We’re starting with a reason that resonates deeply here in New York: winter.

Winter in New York, Reimagined

Winter in New York has its own personality. Crisp air, the beauty of a fresh snowfall, and the familiar question. Who’s shoveling this time? For many older adults, the colder months can turn everyday tasks into stressful chores. That’s where maintenance-free living changes everything.

Winter Without the Worry

In a maintenance-free community, winter simply feels different. While snow falls outside, members stay cozy inside knowing plows, walkways and entrances are handled by a dedicated team. No bundling up to shovel. No worrying about slipping on ice. No calling around for last-minute help after a storm.

Instead, winter becomes something to enjoy, not manage.

Safety Comes First

Snow and ice are more than inconvenient. They’re safety risks. Maintenance-free living means professionally cleared paths, well-lit walkways and thoughtfully designed buildings that reduce winter hazards. Members can move confidently throughout the community without navigating icy driveways or uneven steps.

Peace of mind is a powerful thing, especially when the weather turns unpredictable.

Warmth, Comfort, and Community

Winter can feel isolating when you’re living alone in a house. In a community setting, members stay connected no matter the season. Shared spaces remain active, social calendars stay full and friendly faces are always close by. Whether it’s a fitness class, a lecture or lingering over coffee with neighbors, winter doesn’t slow life down. It simply moves indoors.

No Home Repairs. No Emergency Calls.

Cold temperatures have a way of revealing home issues. Frozen pipes, heating problems, roof concerns. In a maintenance-free environment, those worries disappear. If something needs attention, it’s taken care of quickly and professionally. Members don’t have to coordinate repairs or stress over unexpected winter expenses.

More Time for What Matters

Without snow removal, maintenance or winter prep on the to-do list, members gain something invaluable — time. Time to read, to socialize, to stay active, to enjoy the season on their own terms. Winter becomes quieter, calmer and far more enjoyable.

Winter Living, One Less Thing to Worry About

New York winters aren’t going anywhere. But how you experience them can change completely. Maintenance-free living allows members to embrace the season with confidence, comfort and ease. No shovels required.

And this is just the beginning.

Stay tuned for the next reason in our series as we continue exploring what makes life in a CCRC like Peconic Landing a smart, rewarding choice all year long.

The holiday season is often described as the most wonderful time of the year, but for many older adults, it can bring a complex mix of emotions. While some look forward to cherished traditions and joyful gatherings, others may quietly struggle with feelings of grief, loneliness or change. The loss of a spouse, friends or long-standing holiday routines can turn what once brought joy into a tender reminder of what’s no longer there.

At Peconic Landing, we understand that wellness during the holidays goes beyond festivities. It means creating a community where older adults feel seen, supported and connected emotionally, socially and physically. Whether it’s sharing a meal with friends, participating in a seasonal activity, or simply knowing someone is there to listen, this is where wellness and warmth come together.

When the Holidays Feel Heavy

The absence of a family member or friend is often felt most deeply during the holidays. From the empty seat at the table to the missing traditions you once shared, this season can stir feelings of sadness and longing. And for seniors living alone or away from family, those feelings can be magnified.

That’s why connection is one of the most powerful tools for holiday wellness. At Peconic Landing, members are part of a vibrant community where friendship is never far away. Whether it’s decorating with neighbors, attending a concert or enjoying a cozy meal, the opportunities to share the season are endless. And our team members aren’t just here to help. They become like an extended family, offering warmth, kindness and support when they are needed most.

Giving Back, Feeling Good

Another way to lift your spirits during the holidays? Give back. Volunteering your time or helping others in small ways has a big impact, not just for the people you’re supporting, but for your own emotional wellness, too.

Giving back is good for your soul. It brings a sense of purpose, increases feelings of gratitude and helps you feel more connected to something larger than yourself. Whether you’re donating to a cause, helping a neighbor or joining one of Peconic Landing’s many volunteer initiatives, doing good feels good. And during the holidays, those moments of kindness and generosity are especially powerful.

Staying on Track Without Missing Out

Between festive gatherings and traditional treats, the holidays can also be a challenge for those working toward wellness goals. But healthy choices don’t have to come at the expense of holiday joy.
